Art Tour to Perugia – 9-13 April 2008

PERUGIA - PINTORICCHIO AND PERUGINO

The exhibition  on Pintoricchio centred on the Galleria Nazionale dell‘ Umbria in Perugia provides an opportunity to learn about and appreciate this underrated artist. He was, in fact, one of the most important painters of 15C Umbria. A contemporary of Perugino and almost equal in fame during their lifetime, over the years he lived under Perugino’s shadow and was almost forgotten in the 17C and 18C. Rediscovered at the end of the 19C, historians and the more learned public came to reappraise him.

In 1902 Paul Klee, on seeing his frescoes in Pope Borgia’s apartments in the Vatican, said “since I classify Michelangelo as a modern these apartments are for me the most beautiful thing the Renaissance has done in Rome … Pintoricchio is a great artist.”  After this tour, seeing his works in his own environment and through this first groundbreaking exhibition in Perugia’s National Gallery of Umbria, you may agree.

Our itinerary will be as follows:

Wed. 9 April

We will meet Ryanair flight No. 4952 from Stansted 07.35 arriving in Perugia 11.00 am and will go directly to our hotel either the five star Brufani Palace right in the historical centre or as a less expensive option the four star Sangallo Palace close to the old city walls.

2 pm

We will have a conducted tour of the historic centre of Perugia including a visit to the Collegio del Cambio – the money exchange beautifully frescoed by Perugino and Raphael.

4 pm

Visit the exhibition in the Galleria Nazionale dell’ Umbria.

The church of SantAndrea has a painting by Pintoricchio and a crucifix attributed to Giotto. A quick lunch on one of the town’s terraces overlooking the splendid Umbrian countryside will be followed by visits to Trevi to view Pintoricchio’s Madonna with Child in the Church of San Francesco and then to Spoleto, a beautiful Roman and Medieval town to see Pintoricchio’s frescoes in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
